Karen Holm - Teacher

Adventure: An unusual and exciting, typically hazardous experience or activity.
Adventurer: A person who enjoys taking risks and seeking exploration.

For Karen, a self proclaimed adventurer, adventure includes exploring wild, remote places in the far reaches of our earth, experiencing the excitement of life in her own backyard, and spending her days immersed in learning with middle school students.

Born into a family of teachers, Karen grew up believing every moment was an educational opportunity, one learned by seeing, hearing, and doing.  At 17, she began her teaching career as a sailing instructor at a summer camp in the San Juan Islands. After receiving her Bachelors Degree in Art History and Art from Smith College, she worked for years balancing teaching in the outdoors, traveling, starting and running a outdoor pack making business, and traversing from ski areas to island life.

With her partner Rob, Karen finally moved to Seattle to formalize her teaching passion.  She received her Teacher Certificate and Masters Degree in Human Development from Pacific Oaks College and began teaching 4th grade and Middle School Art and Social Studies at the Evergreen School in Seattle.  It was there, where Karen led her first Travel Study Program with 8th graders to China.

Karen started teaching at REALMS our first year.  Her passion for adventure and placing students first has been instrumental in developing our Travel Study Program.  She continues to balance all the aspects of adventure from traveling the western hemisphere by human power, telemark skiing, taking students on fieldwork, to learning to weld.
