Todd LaFrenz - Teacher
Todd LaFrenz grew up in the Minneapolis area and moved to Bozeman, Montana to attend college. While working towards a degree in education at Montana State University, he spent many of his weekends and vacations searching the west for new crags, frozen waterfalls and giant boulders to climb. Skiing is also a passion and Bridger Bowl provided a fertile learning ground to hone those skills. Summers were spent around Woodstock, Vermont guiding week long adventure trips throughout New England.
After college, he spent a year living in a small town outside Yellowstone where his wife, Jackie, was the teacher in a one-room schoolhouse with only 10 students. They moved to Bend in 1998. Here, they found a little start-up school called Seven Peaks where the students had Mrs. LaFrenz as third graders and Mr. LaFrenz as fourth graders. After five years in fourth grade, he moved on to help design and develop a middle school at Seven Peaks, teaching all subject throughout his five years.
During the summers, Todd guided and directed programs for Bend Parks and Recreation and Camp Tamarack near Sisters. He has also created his own Adventure Quest programs for Seven Peaks and Kids Central in Bend. Through these programs he has gained an appreciation for the Central Oregon outdoors and has seen the affect it can have in a child’s learning. He has embraced the expeditionary learning model and strives to enhance both the academic and cultural aspects of his teaching.
Outside of teaching, Todd enjoys the soccer and basketball games of his seven year old son Will and hopes to get his 20 month old daughter Matea onto skis this winter.
