LET'S TEACH KIDS HOW TO GRAPH!

During October and November students worked on math media projects in small groups.  Their job? To teach other sixth graders how to graph ordered pairs and represent linear equations.  Each group brainstormed content, created a storyboard outline, then dove into the application(s) of their choice to create a product using a variety of software platforms (such as iMovie, GarageBand, Powerpoint and Word).

All students helped judge other groups' final product (by rating each Learning Target goal with a Mastery/Proficiency/Development, as well as kind/helpful comments to improve the piece.  Students determined 20% of each group's final grade; Jamison graded the other 80%.  Several projects were featured at school-wide Community Meetings.

To get a mastery on this project, students had to use math vocabulary words accurately, and have an engaging "hook" to keep their audience interested in learning the math.
6th Grade Technology Project

Several 6th graders received mastery on their first Trimester report card for their Habits of Work (HOW) in Determination due to their extraordinary efforts working through tough problems, pushing themselves to edit/revise and produce a higher quality production than they started out with.  Whoo-aaah!!!  Keep it up.  Check out some of the videos here.

WHAT IS TECH ROTATOR, ANYWAY?

6th graders are building literacy skills using a variety of technologies and applications to express and publish their ideas.  Focus for the winter will be on database research and reporting writing and formatting skills.  Coordinating with Brian's Humanities class and upcoming field experiences at Tule Lake, students will have the opportunity to practice and improve these skills in Technology class.

Students will focus on improving typing speed & accuracy, as well as more multi-media projects that allow them to experiment with a broad range of media software applications.  I'm impressed with the willingness with which most students embrace technological challenges so they can express their ideas creatively and in an engaging manner for their target audience.  That's technology literacy, a life skill we hope they continue to develop throughout their academic careers.

INSPIRATION MINDMAPS OF COMMUNITY IDEALS

After discovering which multiple intelligences they favor in their learning, 6th graders used the application Inspiration to create graphic organizers to communicate the community ideals they developed at the beginning of the year.  Respect, empathy, and responsibility were some major themes the kids developed and displayed in graphical form.  Many of them had a chance to share their mind maps during a REALMS community meeting.
