Travel Study

At REALMS, students culminate their 3 year middle school experience with an extended Travel Study. Travel Study at REALMS generally consists of a two week (or longer) trip to a destination rich in adventure, curriculum, and community-based learning. The travel portion of the experience is just one phase that is made much richer by careful academic preparation prior to departure, and the creation of a multi-media presentation upon return to share the learning and growth that invariably occurs on such adventures.

The rationale for travel study rests in the belief that education which encourages students to participate physically, mentally and emotionally in new and challenging experiences is powerful, and remains with participants for a very long time.  Going to a place new to every student challenges each to take risks and grow.  Coming face to face with people of other communities and cultures, discovering first hand how the early explorers studied the coast, and living in direct contact with the natural world, are all valuable experiences.  Such experiences help students make connections between the classroom and the larger world, they help students build an appreciation for diversity, and they inspire a love of learning and exploration.
