“Students and teachers are strengthened by acts of consequential service to others, and one of an Expeditionary Learning school's primary functions is to prepare students with the attitudes and skills to learn from and be of service”At REALMS, service is integrated into the learning expeditions that our students pursue in and out of the classroom. Often, the culminating projects that students create at the end of an expedition are themselves, acts of service. For example, our students culminated their study of plant and animal physiology with the creation a field guide to the plants and animals of a local watershed. Fifty copies of this field guide were then published, reproduced, and donated to the local environmental education center for their use with visiting students.
